Sustainability and personal care: a regulatory view

The personal care industry is undergoing a shift towards sustainability, driven by consumer demand, corporate responsibility and regulatory imperatives. This article explores some of the initiatives and regulatory frameworks influencing sustainability practice in the personal care industry. It highlights some evolving standards and processes aimed at ensuring environmental responsibility, product safety and ethical sourcing from industry associations, such as the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) and the British Beauty Council. Additionally, it looks at certification programmes such as Ecocert and the COSMOS Standard, which were established to regulate and certify organic ingredient sourcing and manufacturing, while also considering the forthcoming EU Green Claims Directive.
